6TH ANNUAL BOARD RETAILERS ASSOCIATON RETAIL SUMMIT SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES STILL AVAILABLE – Board sport companies have a unique opportunity to support the initiatives of independent retailers from across the country as they gather for the 6th Annual Board Retailers Association Retail Summit in Huntington Beach, California, April 22-24, 2009. The Retail Summit will provide specialty board sport retailers the opportunity to get together for three full days of seminars, workshops and panel discussions focused on improving business and more importantly, their bottom line. The Retail Summit has traditionally been a grandiose affair held at a luxury resort destination, but this year due to the economy and the struggles facing the industry and specialty retailers in particular, we have cut the frills and are going bare bone minimum in order to still provide the educational component at a fraction of the cost. Despite these cuts and the bargain registration fee of $300, there are still retailers who can use your support via a Retail Summit Scholarship. Consider Sponsoring-a-Retailer from Southern California that you know can benefit from participating in a conference that focuses on credit and debt management, pricing and discounting, merchandising, marketing and customer service. With speakers ranging from Tommy Knapp, former Founder/President of Honolua Surf Company, to Charlie Cotton of Path to the Rack Consulting, the BRA Retail Summit is sure to leave retailers better prepared to move forward in 2009. For a complete schedule of events, visit http://www.boardretailers.org. While the focus of the Summit is business, there will be ample opportunities to mix and mingle with industry representatives in a fun and relaxed setting at the beach demo day and movie premiere party at the Newport Beach Film Festival. For more information on attending or supporting this event, please contact BRA at info@boardretailers.org. www.boardretailers.org

VENICE SKATEPARK UPDATE – ‘Ten years ago a group of local lifelong sk8boarders banded together to lobby the City of L.A to build a sk8park after their beloved Venice Pavilion was demolished. Much as David and Goliath, the fledgling platoon of sk8boarders took on a near insurmountable task, unknowingly entering into the lion’s lair of L.A City politics. By 2000 The platoon of sk8rs had grown to company size and had held several protests/sk8board demonstrations to arouse public awareness of their battle for a world class sk8park. The first obstacle on the path to construction turned out to be the L.A Kings Hockey organization of all people. It turned out that the L.A Kings had a back door deal to exchange advertising for venture capitol. Imagine, a City Counsel member’s Sr Deputy assistant had plans for an ice hockey and ice skating rink where there was once the very alpha centre of sk8boarding culture. Well, the skaters opposed the Kings/City Counsel deal. A showdown came to head in San Diego at a California Coastal Commission(CCC) hearing in April of 2000. Fortune smiled upon the sk8boarders as the CCC deemed the Kings plans not within the parameters of the CCC requirments. Amazingly the City Council switched sides and supported the construction of a sk8park. This small victory was only the beginning of an incredable series of negotiations, campaining and lobbying that eventually led to the 2009 construction of the only sk8park in America on the sand. The skaters have had direct involvement in every stage of the process on the road to completion of the sk8park including the design and construction.’ – WORDS BY EG AT SECTOR 9. www.sector9.com.

BOARD RETAILERS ASSOCIATION Renews Endorsement of ActionWatch – The Board Retailers Association has renewed its endorsement of ActionWatch, the action sports industry’s POS-based market-tracking service developed by AA Data Company. ‘ActionWatch is an important service to help surf and skate retailers stay on top of national trends in the industry and to provide benchmark data to compare our stores against,’ said Todd Roberts, BRA chairman and co-owner of ZJ Boarding House. ‘We encourage all action sports retailers to participate in this program – it’s free to retailers and provides many valuable benefits to its members and to the industry as a whole.’ The ActionWatch Retail Panel currently includes more than 200 independent specialty surf and/or skate stores throughout the nation. Participating retailers receive access to a series of over 50 relevant reports that are updated each month along with comprehensive annual reports that include detailed information on each significant product category and the performances of the top brands in each product class. ‘In addition to the great benchmarking and trending data, one of the most valuable benefits to retailers is that ActionWatch helps increase the voice of the independent specialty retailer,’ stated Melissa Clary, BRA Executive Director. ‘As this is one of the main goals of the Board Retailers Association, endorsing ActionWatch is well aligned with our mission.’ Retailers participate by providing monthly sales and inventory reports, which are translated into a product and categorization system, before being merged together. This process serves the purposes of combining the data into a usable format and also protecting the confidentiality of individual store’s information. Participation can be automatic or require only a few minutes each month, depending on the POS software used by the retailer. ‘Market-tracking programs like ActionWatch can’t exist without participation of the industry’s retailers, so we really appreciate BRA for encouraging their members to be a part of the program,’ states Cary Allington, co-founder of AA Data Company. More information about the ActionWatch program can be found at www.ActionWatchReports.com. The Board Retailers Association (BRA) is a non-profit trade association representing over 500 action sport retailers in the surf, skate, snow, wake, kite and wind industry with over 3,000 storefronts across the country.
