PEARL JAM NEWS – Pearl Jam Breaks Their Career Record With #1 Positions at Modern Rock Radio and iTunes — Pearl Jam has begun their assault on both the airwaves and the internet with their first single, ”World Wide Suicide” off of their forthcoming, self-titled album due out May 2. ”World Wide Suicide” hit number #1 on the Modern Rock Chart this week. The single was released to radio only two weeks ago and not since U2’s ”Discotheque,” nearly a decade ago, has a song moved so quickly to the top spot. The song entered the chart at #3 – the highest radio debut of the band’s 15-year career. The song is also the #1 most added track of the year at Modern, Active and Rock radio formats, and #1 in Audience for both Modern and Heritage Rock formats. At the same time the song was offered to radio, Pearl Jam offered it as a limited unrestricted free download for fans through their website and through a partnership with myspace.com – an unprecedented move for a band of this stature. The song was downloaded over a quarter of a million times before being put up for sale on iTunes where it is currently ranked #1. Upon the release of the album, the band is scheduled to begin their North American tour. Pearl Jam announced today the second leg of their 2006 U.S. tour is scheduled to kick off on June 23 in Pittsburgh, PA and will finish on July 22 in George, WA. JELLO BIAFRA NEWS – “Due to reports of people buying $25 tickets to a so-called ”Fab Mab Reunion” concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco thinking it’s a Dead Kennedys reunion, Jello Biafra responds: Enough people are confused that we need to set the record straight. No, it is not a Dead Kennedys reunion. Yes, I am boycotting the whole scam. These are the same greed-mongers who ran to corporate lawyers and sued me for over six years in a dispute sparked by my not wanting ”Holiday in Cambodia” sold into a Levi’s commercial. They now pimp Dead Kennedys in the same spirit as Mike Love suing Brian Wilson over and over again, then turning around and playing shows as the Beach Boys. They despise everything our band ever stood for. ”Money Uber Alles” is what all these bands used to stand against. Back in Mabuhay days, no one was more up front about not selling out to Bill Graham than Dead Kennedys and Flipper, especially Will Shatter (RIP). Now Bill Graham Presents has been swallowed and the name is being used as a front for Clear Channel, as nasty a corporate predator as Fox News and Wal-Mart. It breaks my heart that Dead Kennedys now seems to have the worst reputation of any old punk band trying to cash in on their names. We still get complaints from people who bought tickets to shows expecting Dead Kennedys and getting stuck with the world’s greatest karaoke band. Others report someone they know getting ripped off thinking they were seeing me the whole time because no one on stage ever mentioned the singer’s name. I guess it’s sort of like paying to see Black Sabbath and finding out the singer is Donny Osmond. So I hope people who go know in advance what they are getting into. As Johnny Rotten said at the Sex Pistols’ own miserable Bill Graham experience, ”Ever get the feeling you’re being cheated?” For more go to www.alternativetentacles.com.

DAY ONE OF THE BODY GLOVE SURFBOUT PRESENTED BY ADIO – Day one of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) four-star Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio began April 25th at Lower Trestles with overcast skies and small, clean conditions. Motivated by the $75,000 prize purse, valuable World Qualifying Series (WQS) points and the promise of better waves in an almost empty Lower Trestles line-up, competitors made the best of the challenging surf. After a slow start to round one, Roger Eales looking smooth and quick on his feet, was rewarded for his efforts with two of the best scores of the morning, an 8.67 and 8.07. Other round one competitors who worked the small surf and managed to post solid score totals were Chris Drummy with a combine score of 14.93 and Dennis Rizzo with a combine total of 16.06. Round two commenced at mid-day and with a little help from the tidal push, Lowers stayed contestable with light winds and improving glassy conditions. In heat three of that round Jeremy Jones posted the highest score of the day, an 8.83. But even with the day’s best wave, his second ride wasn’t enough to advance him in first place. Instead, it was Jeremy Johnston, with a pair of mid-range scores who made it to round three in the top slot. By the end of the day, with a swell scheduled to arrive later in the week, it was clear that those who advanced were relieved. The Surfbout is also the first stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series. The Trifecta was formed in 2005 as part of a three-year plan to strengthen surfing in America by uniting the Body Glove Surfbout presented Adio, the Newport Pro presented by Wavewatch, and the O”Neill Cold Water Classic under one banner. The Trifecta will award a $33,333 bonus to the surfer that takes first-place in all three events. Should no one surfer take the win in all three events, the Trifecta also awards an overall points-winner bonus of $10,000. Live scoring available at www.bodyglovesb.asglive.com. FUEL TV will telecast the Body Glove Surfbout on June 12, 2006 at 9:30 p.m.

SURF CONTEST – For Immediate Release: OAKLEY PRO JUNIOR SURF CONTEST HITS LOWER TRESTLES APRIL 28 AND 29 – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) today announced that for the first time ever, the Grade 2 Oakley Pro Junior will be held at Lower Trestles. The event, which takes place on April 28 and 29, is being held in conjunction with the Body Glove Surfbout Presented by Adio and is also the first stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series. Thirty-two top American and International surfers under the age of 20 will compete for the $10,000 prize purse and the opportunity to earn valuable points toward the 2007 Billabong World Junior Championships. After Lower Trestles, the Oakley Pro Junior’s second stop will be a stand-alone event held August 5-6 in Ocean City, New Jersey. The series of Oakley Pro Junior events will culminate at the 2006 O’Neill Coldwater Classic at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, Calif., October 17-22, which is also the final stop of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series. www.adiofootwear.com

BPSA UK Tour to Commence the O’Neill Highland Open – The 2nd leg of the BPSA UK Tour takes place from April 23-24, 2006, with the O’Neill Scottish BPSA Challenge at the legendary Thurso East. The O’Neill Scottish BPSA Challenge will precede the 5 Star WQS O’Neill Highland Open Event and is a two day event with a 1 star rating. The event will also offer a wild card place into the 5 Star WQS for the highest rated Scottish Surfer, giving him the chance to pit home break knowledge against the best in the World. Also confirmed for this event is the UK’s most successful competition surfer, Russell Winter! Thurso East breaks over kelp covered slate reef for 50 – 100 metres and is a World class break. Brimms Ness Bowl, just around the corner, picks up any swell available and can be 4ft even when Thurso is flat. Other quality breaks in the region, that can be used for competition include Castletown, Murkle and Sandside Bay. The main difference to the event for 2006 is the time of year. If the competitors found the water cold at the last BPSA stop in Croyde for the Saltrock Open, they are in for a shock. This is one of the factors that make this such an interesting event with temperatures resting at a chilly 8 degrees. Elsewhere at the event, Foster’s will be bringing their beer and their Barbie to feed and ‘water’ the competitorsas well as putting on a killer party at Thurso’s legendary Skinandi’s Nightclub! Freerange will be around as always. This event’s move will be best barrel. Micah Lester got it last year, who will take home the extra cash this time? Massive thanks goes out to all the sponsors, especially O’Neill as title sponsors and tour sponsors Foster’s and Freerange Sports Optics.

SAVE TRESTLES – If Surfers Do Not Save Trestles, Who Will? The water quality, sandbar sedimentation, and glorious sense of place of Trestles are threatened by an ill-planned toll road highway that would parallel (not just cross) the largely pristine San Mateo Creek that empties into the great Trestles breaks. It’s very important to keep the proposed toll road highway out of San Onofre State Beach and away from the San Mateo Creek. For more info on saving Trestles from the tollroad, see Surfrider’s Save Trestles web section at http://www.surfrider.org/savetrestles.

PEARL JAM PITCHES IN TO HELP SAVE TRESTLES – The Surfrider Foundation today announced that the Vitalogy Foundation will be donating $1.00 from every ticket sold for Pearl Jam’s upcoming Los Angeles concert to help with the organization’s Save Trestles campaign. The donation will be made in memory of longtime band friend and Surfrider Foundation activist Dave ”the Rapscallion” Russell. This is made possible by Pearl Jam’s agreement to contribute a portion of its ticket sales to the Vitalogy Foundation in support of local charities. Pearl Jam will be performing at the Forum in Los Angeles on July 9th and 10th, with special guests Sonic Youth. Proceeds from the show will go to assist the Surfrider Foundation in their efforts to stop a proposed toll road project that threatens both San Onofre State Beach and the world class surf break at Trestles. The project is being undertaken by a private company, the Transportation Corridor Agency, who was recently named in a lawsuit filed by the California State’s Attorney General’s office. Separate lawsuits were also filed by the Surfrider Foundation and its partners, and the Native American Heritage Commission. ”This project would profoundly compromise Southern California’s last remaining, unimpeded coastal watershed,” says Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation spokesperson. ”It not only harms our State Park and surfing resources, but significantly jeopardizes the eleven threatened or endangered species that call San Mateo Creek home.” The donation will be made in the name of Dave Russell. Russell, a long-time Surfrider Foundation activist, lost his fight with a rare form of thyroid cancer on February 1st, 2006 at the age of 39. Dave’s tireless energy and passion for surfing, filmmaking and environmental activism made him an irreplaceable asset to the San Diego surfing community. In addition to his contributions to various surf films on the resurgence of post-modern surfboard designs, Dave was also in the process of documenting the history of the Surfrider Foundation when the cancer was discovered. For more information on Pearl Jam or their upcoming tour, please go to www.pearljam.com.

COALITION SUES TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR AGENCY TO BLOCK TOLL ROAD THROUGH SAN ONOFRE STATE BEACH – A coalition of environmental organizations today filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court in San Diego County against the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) for violations of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). On February 23, 2006, the TCA certified the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Report and selected a route that would build a toll road directly through California’s fifth most popular state park, San Onofre State Beach, devastating it and other recreation and conservation lands. The lawsuit charges that the TCA failed to adequately analyze the environmental impacts of the proposed toll road, did not provide adequate mitigation for those impacts, and ignored feasible alternatives to the toll road. These deficiencies represent significant violations of CEQA. ”The TCA has grossly underestimated the impacts that this toll road would have on San Onofre State Beach. It undermined the public process by failing to explore alternatives that would avoid the State Beach entirely and would provide traffic benefits equal or greater than the toll road,” said William White of Shute, Mihaly and Weinberger LLP, the lead attorney for the coalition. Mr. White is joined by a legal team that includes, Joel Reynolds and James Birkelund, attorneys for the Natural Resources Defense Counsel; Michael Fitts, staff attorney for the Endangered Habitats League and Elizabeth Lake and Amanda Monchamp from Holland + Knight, LLP. ”Bulldozing a toll road through San Onofre State Beach makes no environmental, economic or legal sense,” said Joel Reynolds, senior attorney, National Resources Defense Council. ”We designate state parks to protect them, not to warehouse them for future development.” ”This is an unprecedented taking of State Park land that would destroy a unique resource and undermine affordable access to the coastline. It would be precedent-setting for development projects across the State. No part of the State Parks System would be safe in the future if the TCA is allowed to build this toll road through San Onofre State Beach,” said Elizabeth Lake, attorney for Holland + Knight, LLP and a board member of the California State Parks Foundation. ”We are pleased to see the Attorney General also is filing a complaint on behalf of the people of the state of California,” commented Elizabeth Goldstein, president, California State Parks Foundation. ”A recent poll of California voters across the political spectrum showed that 73% opposed the toll road cutting through San Onofre.” TCA is a joint powers agency comprised entirely of local governments within Orange County. The proposed toll road alignment would destroy San Onofre State Beach, which is located in San Diego County. San Onofre State Beach, which is currently enjoyed by 2.5 million people a year, is the fifth most heavily used park in the California State Parks System. The toll road would force the closure of the majority of the park, destroy its most popular campground, pollute its world-class surfing beaches and degrade habitat for 11 endangered or threatened species. The park was established for the citizens of California by then Governor Ronald Reagan and then President Richard Nixon. At the dedication of the park, Governor Reagan said ”I firmly believe one of the greatest legacies we can leave to future generations is the heritage of our land, but unless we can preserve and protect the unspoiled areas which God has given us, we will have nothing to leave them. This expanse of acreage, San Onofre Bluffs State Beach, now has its future guaranteed as an official state park.” The coalition includes the California State Parks Foundation, the Sierra Club, Surfrider Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sea and Sage Audubon Society, Laguna Greenbelt Inc., and the Endangered Habitats League.

THE SURF BOOK – NOW AVAILABLE – From the beginning of his career, photographer Michael Halsband has made portraits of artists and musicians. In 1981 he traveled with The Rolling Stones as the official photographer on the Tattoo You tour. In the years that followed, he transitioned to editorial and commercial photography, until 1991, when he returned to portrait work. Since the 90’s he has also written and directed music videos and commercials. Halsband’s personal photo-documentary projects include a book project with AC/DC (1996, 2000), nudes and portraits of sex industry workers (1991-6) and a project with the School of American Ballet (1986-1991). QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS SET NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD – The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships will be held in Brazil for the first time next month (May 6-14) with a record 28 national teams competing, one more than last year’s highly successful event at Huntington Beach, California. The prestigious junior event has seen a steady climb in numbers since 16 countries competed in the inaugural event in South Africa in 2003, which increased to 23 in Tahiti the following year. Each country is represented by four athletes competing in the boys under 18 division, four in the boys under 16 division and four in the girls under 18 division. The scores of the top three athletes per division are added up to reach the final ranking to decide the World Junior Surfing Champion Team.

1888PoliceGazette

SURF HISTORY UPDATE – Recently, a cover and short column in an 1888 Asbury Park ”Police Gazette” have had the surf historian community a’buzz. ”The Sandwich Island Girl” story is one that — so far — cannot be confirmed nor denied, but must hold some truth to it on some level. It is significant for surfing historians and writers of surfing history because it indicates that the first USA mainland surfing was most likely NOT performed by Hawaiian princes schooling in the Santa Cruz area in 1895, nor by hapa haole George Freeth at Venice Beach in 1906. It was probably performed by an unknown Hawaiian girl or woman in Asbury Park, New Jersey, in 1888! Read the rest of the story at www.legendarysurfers.com.

REEF’S BRAD GERLACH WINS TOP HONORS AT BILLABONG XXL AWARDS – In front of an audience of 2000 surfing and industry professionals, Brad Gerlach was recognized at the Billabong XXL awards for riding the biggest wave of 2005. Measuring in at 68 feet, the December session at Todos earned Gerlach $68,000 and further validation of his incredible talent as a big wave surfer. Notable mentions to Reef team riders Ibon Amatriain from Spain and Laurie Towner from Australia for their nominations, as well as photographer Robert Brown who was honored with a $5000 check for capturing the footage of Gerlach’s winning wave. When asked how he celebrated after the awards, in true Gerlach style he went up to LA to party with friends and celebrated with a few bottles of Cristal. Visit www.reef.com and www.vfc.com.
